Stitched
art now on display at CTC
The
CTC Fine Arts Department announced the opening of a new
art exhibit today featuring the works of Mary Ruth Smith,
art professor at Baylor University . Entitled “Obsessively
Stitched,” the exhibit highlights 40 of Smith's pieces of
fabric panels made up of extreme detail and minute stitches.
Smith
works each piece until it is filled with stitches, color
changes and complex images. Works comparable to those
in this exhibit make up a long and impressive exhibition
history for the artist. Sometimes referred to as “art quilts,”
Smith's work has been shown in many U.S. cities as well
as in France , Ukraine , Argentina , England , China , Australia
, Italy and Korea . She has consistently won awards
throughout her artistic career.
The
artist holds a Ph.D. from Florida State University along
with two master's degrees from the University of Georgia
and the University of Tennessee . She has had her work published
in many journals and magazines which feature the craft of
textile design and production. Smith also has presented
her work in lectures and workshops in many cities in this
country and abroad.
Dr.
Smith's professional activities include membership in numerous
textile arts organizations, judging and organizing shows
and of great importance - sharing her vast experience with
her Baylor students in fibers and fabric design.
The
“Obsessively Stitched” exhibit is free and open to the public
during regular library hours through December 3. For
