Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Exemptions

A student is exempt from all TSI requirements under any one of the following conditions.

  • The student has earned a degree from a recognized institution of higher learning
  • The student was honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty, the Texas National Guard or served as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States on or after August 1, 1990
  • The student has attended another Texas public institution and has been determined to have met college readiness standards by that institution
  • The student has transferred to the college from a private or independent institution of higher education or an accredited out-of-state institution of higher education and has completed college-level coursework in reading, writing and math

A student is exempt from one or more TSI requirements under the following conditions. SAT, ACT, TAKS and STAAR scores used to support an exemption must be less than five years old.

  • A student with a SAT score of at least 1070 (administered prior to March 5, 2016) and a math score of at least 500 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT score of at least 1070 (administered prior to March 5, 2016) and a critical reading score of at least 500 is exempt from the reading and writing requirements TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT administered on or after March 5, 2016 with a minimum score of 530 on mathematics is exempt from the mathematics section of the TSI Assessment
  • A student with a SAT administered on or after March 5, 2016 with a minimum score of 480 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) exempt from both reading and writing sections of the TSI Assessment
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and a math score of at least 19 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and an English score of at least 19 is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS math score of at least 2200 is exempt from the math TSI Assessment
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS English/language arts score of at least 2200 and an essay score of at least 3 is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 score of 4000 on the STAAR English III end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the reading and writing TSI Assessment
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 score of 4000 on the STAAR Algebra II end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the math TSI Assessment

With a comprehensive exemption, a student qualifies for the following entry level college courses:  ENGL 1301, MATH 1314/1324/1332/1342, and BIOL 1406. If you have an exemption and are having trouble registering for these courses, please email registration.help@ctcd.edu.

 

Waivers

A student is waived from all TSI requirements under any one of the following conditions.

  • The student is a non-degree-seeking or a non-certificate-seeking student
  • The student is seeking credit to transfer to another institution (transient)
  • The student is seeking a level 1 certificate (42 or fewer credit hours)
  • The student is serving on active duty, in the Texas National Guard or is a member of a Reserve component (serving for at least three years preceding enrollment) of the Armed Forces of the United States.
